$180.00 including GST | Credit card, BPay and cheque payment available | 4 CPD points
Please note, this is a repeat seminar
As a reminder, three of the topics are the same as we covered earlier in the year during the regional RMI On the Road, as well as in the Risk Management Intensive recently held in July and August. The fourth additional topic will be presented by the Legal Services Board + Commissioner.
The engagement habit
All legal practitioners are at risk of professional negligence claims, particularly if they haven’t got the right systems in place. This session will help practitioners in all areas of work to identify common and high-risk situations. It will provide practical ways to avoid and manage those risks for a safer, claims-free practice.
1 CPD point - Practice management | Presented by Stephen Bubb, Risk Manager, LPLC
Solicitors' certificates - are you being heard?
The requests for solicitors’ certificates are increasing both in number and variety. Irrespective of whether the certificate is being sought by “walk-in” or long-standing clients, practitioners need to be extremely diligent in their review of the relevant documents, the advice provided to the clients and their own file management. This may be difficult given time and costing limitations, not to mention the pressure from clients to “simply sign off” on what they may view as just another administrative loan document.
In this session, our presenter, will highlight some of the common – and serious – errors made by practitioners as well as provide useful tips on how to minimise risk exposure.
1 CPD point - Practice management | Presented by Heather Hibberd, Chief Risk Manager, LPLC
Victorian Legal Services Board + Commissioner
The VLSB+C will be presenting four key topics:
Cyber security | Overview of protocols and guidance on how to minimise risk.
Upsurge in clerks/paralegals stealing trust funds from law practices | Case studies and discussion on what can be done to reduce the likelihood of thefts occurring.
Unqualified legal practice | Guidance on what legal practices can do to ensure they are not exposed to complaints and possible prosecution for unqualified legal practice.
Current projects | Overview of key areas of focus and innovative projects.
1 CPD point - Ethics and professional responsibility | Presenters are Howard Bowles and Rai Small
Conveyancing tax issues
Tax issues arise in many files especially conveyancing. This session considers the most common taxes which practitioners come across in conveyancing matters including GST, CGT, land tax and duty. Details will be provided of where practitioners go wrong together with tips on how to avoid claims about taxes. A couple of exercises will also be included to demonstrate the root causes of claims.
1 CPD point - 0.5 Substantive law, 0.5 Practice management | Presented by Phil Nolan, Risk Manager, LPLC
